Blogher’s NaBloPoMo topic this month is “Know” and the first three prompts are about news outlets. Being a parent has completely changed the way that I consume news. I get most of my information about current events from Facebook. There, I admit it!
When I was in college I used to faithfully watch the five o’clock news. I gave it up because it was depressing. Inevitably, I would hear a snippet of news and I would need to go online to find out the real story. Then, the real story would either be much worse or completely insignificant. Setting aside an hour or more every evening to meditate on doom and gloom didn’t fit in with my vision for my life. Surely, there are more productive things to do with that hour.
As a new Mom I didn’t have much brain power to spare for anything that was not related to breast milk or diaper rash. Eventually, parenting information overload set in and I didn’t want to hear about that either. It’s a fallacy that a parent needs every scrap of information about every aspect of life to make good decisions for their child. In fact, trying to use all that extra information gets in the way of making decisions that are right for us.
When I get my news on social media I see relevant things. I read about all kinds of families and the latest news in education. Instead of ads for junk food, I see new homeschooling products and crafts. I see current local events that I can participate in with my family. When mainstream news seeps in it is wrapped in a Christian worldview of faith and optimism. I can usually interact with my favourite writers. Instead of making me feel sad and isolated, my news stream tells me that I belong to a huge community and I can make a difference.
At this point in my life I get all my news from Facebook and I like it that way. What about you? Where are good places to get news?
